On Monday, February 3, Gretna Elementary School's third, fourth, and fifth grade students participated in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The students were given words to spell from materials prepared by the Scripps National Spelling Bee Program. Students displayed knowledge learned throughout their school experience while competing for top honors. Angel Owens, a fifth grader, claimed first place and Paris Irvin, a fifth grader, was the second place winner. The following students also earned their way into the final round of the school spelling bee: Jaiden Childress, Kenley Coleman, Isabelle Neesmith, Xavier Berger, Brenden Smith, Brock Dowdy, Landon Cook, Danica Allen and Isabella Brumfield. Angel and Paris will participate in the Danville Area Spelling Bee, which will be held at Averett University on Saturday, March 21, 2020.
